Canadian Press (CP) reported on September 15th that Prime Minister Harper, responding to questions about the effects of the US economic crisis said, “…this is a situation we’ve been watching very closely for the past year…” He went on to say that, we’ve been on constant consultationswith our G-7 partners, in particular, to look at what changes need to be made in the marketplace to increase the transparency and efficiency of the lending practices as they cross international borders. The Bank of Canada has said it will provide liquidity as required to support the stability of the Canadian financial system and the functioning of financial markets.” (Our emphasis DC)
It is an admission by Harper that his Government has been conducting secret discussions outside of Parliament for more than a year in Washington, Brussels, the WTO and IMF about how to enact corporate plans to prop up the stock market, cover bank losses, buy up bad investment debt and protect big investor profits at the expense of Canadian taxpayers! The $700 billion Bush bailout in the US will be discussed openly in the US Congress. Harper discusses the fate of the Canadian people in secret!
Is there a Harper Plan for billion dollar taxpayer’s bailout package ready to be rolled out in Canada? Count on it!
The Canadian working class has no obligation to support the Harper Plan to help US and Canadian banks and investor speculators to save their system at the expense of worker’s jobs, wages, homes, savings and pensions.
There is a working class answer to the Harper corporate plan: The System Can’t Be Fixed and We Will Conduct a Struggle to Replace It!
On October 14th elect MP’s that put working class needs first.
At a minimum every candidate in the federal election seeking working class votes must pledge on the first day of Parliament, that the first order of business will be the enactment of a people’s plan that guarantees full security for family incomes. As a minimum:
· Ban foreclosures and evictions from homes whether owned or rental.
· A moratorium on the mortgage payments of all unemployed worker’s homes.
· Unemployment insurance for all for the full duration of unemployment.
· Guarantee all pension benefits and index to the COL.
· Declare the denial of home heating a crime.
· Every worker guaranteed transportation to the work place.
· A freeze on all student debt.
· Free tuition for all university, technology and trades training.
· End all public school fees.
· Free public transit for students, seniors and the unemployed.
· Free public child care
· Food for the hungry – homes for the homeless.
What is the economy for if it isn’t for the people?
